Electrical Consultants, Inc. assisted Tesoro Refinery with the preparation of updates to the existing fire water system to comply with the current NFPA codes, regulations, and the refinery’s standards. These modifications included replacing pump J-998 with a new pump matching pump J-997. Both pumps to be controlled by new variable frequency drives (VFDs). In conjunction with the pumps and VFDs, new instruments such as flow and pressure controllers were installed to facilitate pump operation.
The project scope included I&E engineering services for two new variable frequency drives to be installed on the existing Firewater Auxilary Pump and Firewater Jockey Pump. In addition, instrumentation and control upgrades to the existing fire water system, including two new pressure transmitters, and new controls and monitoring for the existing diesel engine fire pump controllers that would allow for remote operation provisions were made in the junction boxes for control monitoring of a future third diesel engine powered fire pump.
