Stillwater Wind Substation

Stillwater County, MT

ECI and EPCS provided full scope engineering, procurement, construction management and testing services related to the Stillwater Wind Project, an 80 MW wind facility located in Stillwater County, Montana.  ECI/EPCS was responsible for the design of facility’s substation, collection system and tower wiring.  The project involved a 230-34.5 kV collection substation with interconnection to an adjacent Northwestern Energy substation via an overhead 230 kV ridged bus configuration. The collection substation included one 230-34.5 kV transformer bay with protection provided by a 230 kV circuit breaker.

The substation was designed with 3” and 2” SPS AL tube and AAC jumper bus.  The steel for the substation portion of the project consisted of tapered tubular and standard shapes. All engineering support during construction, project management, construction management, meetings, coordination, testing and commissioning were provided by the ECI/EPCS team including the provision of all major 230 kV and 34.5 kV equipment for this station.

For the collection system, ECI/EPCS provided all of the engineering, equipment, materials, installation labor, testing, and construction management for approximately 87,063 trench feet of 35 kV cable and associated fiber and ground wire.  In addition, junction boxes, splices, arrestors and elbows were supplied and installed for a fully functional collection system.

The tower scope included the installation of control and power cables/bus in the towers installed by others and supply and installation of permanent FAA lights on 26 wind turbines within the system.

  • Design/build of 230-34.5 kV substation for wind facility.
  • Design/build of accompanying collection system and control tower wiring.
